In Hinduism, every day in the calendar has it’s own particular importance. Special rituals, including prayer and fasting, are performed to honor gods and goddesses on particular date (Tithi) to get their blessing.

Fasting in Sanskrit is called as Upavaasa. “Upa” means “near” and “vaasa” means “to stay”. Therefore Upavaasa means staying near / close (to the God), Or you can simply say attaining closeness to the God.

In Hindus, eating is a sacrificial ritual when perform is called as fasting. Fasting is to purify the body and the soul. It develops the sattvic quality of detachment and equanimity with the god. Hindus thus observe fasting on special occasions to show respect to their god.

  • Monday Fasting (Somvar Vrat)
  • Tuesday Fasting (Manglvar Vrat)
  • Wednesday Fasting (Budhvar Vrat)
  • Thursday Fasting (Guruvar Vrat)
  • Friday Fasting (Shukravar Vrat)
  • Saturday Fasting (Shanivar Vrat)
  • Sunday Fasting (Ravivar Vrat)

Week day fasting can also be perform base on astrological recommendations. As per Indian Astrology, fasting is observer, if any particular planet is quite week to give it’s good effects or if any particular planet is badly place in horoscope then to avoid it’s malefic effects. Monday is for Moon, Tuesday for Mars, Wednesday for Mercury, Thursday for Jupiter, Friday for Venus, Saturday for Saturn & Sunday for Sun.
