Aloo-poha or Batata Pohe

Aloo Poha Recipe is a simple, healthy breakfast recipe typically served in north Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Telangana. It is prepare from flattened rice, diced potatoes, finely chopped onions, peanuts and other herbs and spices.

The preparation may vary and each region may introduce a subtle changes to recipe preparation. Moreover, it is also known with different names like pohay, pohe or even kahara avalakki.

Morning breakfast is always tricky for almost all women so you need look at, what your child will eat? What your husband likes? Again it should be healthy, easy & quick to make, everyday something new & so on… I always struggle to get the time and good healthy breakfast combination & end up preparing poha recipe. The best part of it is you can alter the contain & get slight different dish easily like kanda poha recipe, aloo poha, Jain Poha (No Onion, No Garlic), Poha Upma, Protein rich Poha, Poha Cutlet & so on… Today, we are going to make Aloo Poha here.

Equipment

  • nonstick pan
  • Bowl
  • Strainer
  • spatula

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup Thick Poha (Aval / beaten rice)
  • ½ tsp Sugar
  • Salt, to taste
  • 3 tsp Oil
  • 2 tbsp Peanuts
  • 1 tsp Mustard
  • ½ tsp Cumin
  • tsp Hing (Asafoetida)
  • 6-8 Curry Leaves
  • 1 Onion, finely chopped
  • 1 Green Chilli, finely chopped
  • 1 inch Ginger, finely chopped
  • 1 Potato, chopped
  • ½ tsp Turmeric
  • 1 tbsp Coriander, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp Lemon juice

Instructions
 

  • Take a bowl, add thick poha
  • Add water, stir it and soak for 50 to 60 seconds
  • Drain off the water with strainer
  • Abs add sugar, salt mix it well and keep aside
  • Heat a kadhai and add oil, add raw peanuts roast it and add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, asafoetida (hing), Curry leaves splutter them
  • Add onion and saute it 1 to 2 minutes
  • Add green chilli, ginger saute for 1 minute
  • Add potato, salt, turmeric and mix it well
  • Cover a lid and simmer 5 minutes, open a lid potato cooked
  • Add soaked poha, mix it, cover a lid and simmer 2 minutes
  • Open a lid and add coriander, lemon juice mix it well
  • Serve
